Splitting Bills Among Groups

When dining with friends, calculate the tip on the total pre-tax bill, then divide evenly. Our calculator handles per-person splits automatically.

Example: $120 bill, 20% tip ($24), among 4 people
Total: $120 + $24 = $144
Per person: $144 ÷ 4 = $36 each

Tip on Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax Amount?

Standard Practice: Calculate tips on the pre-tax subtotal. Servers didn't provide service on the tax itself. However, some people tip on post-tax totals for simplicity (makes mental math easier).

Difference: On a $100 meal with 8% tax:
Pre-tax tip (20%): $100 × 0.20 = $20
Post-tax tip (20%): $108 × 0.20 = $21.60
Difference: $1.60 on a $100 meal

Tipping on Discounted or Comped Meals

Important Rule: Always tip based on the original bill amount before discounts, coupons, or gift certificates. Servers did full work regardless of your payment method.

Example: $80 meal discounted to $40 with 50% off coupon:
Tip on $80 (not $40): $80 × 0.20 = $16
Total you pay: $40 + $16 = $56 (still saving $24!)

Auto-Gratuity (Automatic Service Charges)

Many restaurants automatically add 18-20% gratuity for parties of 6+ people. This policy prevents under-tipping on large tabs requiring significant server effort.

Check Your Bill! If auto-gratuity is included, additional tipping is optional. However, if service was exceptional, adding 2-5% more is a nice gesture.

Note: Auto-gratuity must be clearly disclosed (typically noted on menu or bottom of bill). You can request removal in cases of truly poor service, but this is rare and should be discussed with management.

Tipping for Takeout & Pickup Orders
